The Centre for Communication and Social Change (CfCSC) is pleased to announce the publication of a new monograph in the scholarly series, Palgrave Studies in Communication for Social Change.
This first publication of 2025 is entitled The Menstrual Movement in the Media: Reducing stigma and tackling social inequalities, and it is the work of University of Sheffield scholar, Dr Maria Tomlinson. Dr Tomlinson is a Lecturer in Public Communication and Gender, and her research focuses on the impact of public communication on societal perceptions of social inequalities and health.
Dr Tomlinson’s book compiles her research with menstrual activists and young people in Great Britain. Through interviews, focus groups and media analysis, she considers how social media has been used to decrease menstrual stigma and increase the flow of information, solidarity and understanding for people menstruating.
The Palgrave Studies in Communication for Social Change is jointly edited by the Director of the Centre, Associate Professor Elske van de Fliert, and Principal Centre Associate, Associate Professor Pradip Thomas. Since 2014 the series has regularly added titles to its list, expanding the scope and relevance of communication for social change in our contemporary society.
Dr Tomlinson’s publication is open access and is available for free as a PDF and an EPUB. Hardcover and softcover print editions are also available. If you are interested in submitting your work for consideration in the series, please download and complete the book proposal form.
